Life or Death!

The  choice  of  life  or  death  has  been  presented  to  man  from  the  beginning  of  time.  Adam and  Eve  were  presented  this  choice  in  the  garden  of  Eden.  They  defiantly  chose  death  over life,  by  eating  the  fruit  from  the  tree  of  the  knowledge  of  good  and  evil.  Unfortunately,  their  descendants  (mankind)  made  the  same  mistake  over  and  over  again. We  can  see  the results  in  this  sinful  world  of  choosing  death,  each  and  every  one  of  us  has  sinned  and fallen  short  of  the  glory  of  God (Romans 3 v 23).  Praise  be  to  God  that  we  can  be  redeemed through  the  sacrifice  of  His  only  begotten  son  Jesus  Christ,  we  have  now,  a  choice  to choose  life  through  Christ  or  Death!

Life  or  Death!

“Further  more,  tell  the  people, ‘ This  is  what  the  Lord  says:  See,  I  am  setting  before  you  the  way  of  life  and  the  way  of  death. (Jeremiah  21  verse  8)

King  Zedekiah  had  sent  word  to  Jeremiah,  to  enquire  of  God  for  him ,  for  the  Babylonians  were  besieging  the  city  of  Jerusalem.  He  hoped  that  God  would  miraculously  save  them  from  their  enemies  as  God  had  done  in  the  past( Jeremiah 21 verse 1 to 2).  Zedekiah  and  Israel  just  wanted  to  be  saved  from  their  enemies  so  they  could  continue  in  their  sins.  They  had  no  intention  of  repenting  and  turning  to  God,  they  simply  wanted  the divine help,  but  not  the  God  who  could  give  it.  God  spoke  against  this  request  and  said  that  He  would  strengthen  their  enemies  as  they  were  sent  by  Him  to  punish  Israel  for  it’s  sins.  He  told  them  if  they  surrendered  to  the  Babylonians  they  would  live,  if  they  didn’t  they  would  die(  Jeremiah 21 verse 9).  If  they  surrendered  they  would  be  obeying  God,  but  they  chose  to  disobey  God  rather  than  obeying  Him.  They  still  held  on  to  their  pride,  thinking  they  could  save  themselves.

Several  hundred  years  before  this  incident,  the  same  offer  of  life  or  death  was  offered  to  the  Israelites.  God  had  told  them  through  Moses  to choose  life  by  obeying  His  commands,  as  disobeying  would  result  in  ultimate  death ( Deut 30 verse 19 to 20).  The  Israelites  stubbornly  continued  in  their  sins  even  though  they  had  accepted  God’s  covenant  at  the  time  of  Moses.  They  stubbornly  continued  to  choose  death  over  life.

What  exactly  is  life?  The  old  testament  says  that  God  was  Israel’s  Life ( Deut  30 verse  20 ),  some  wonder  what  does  that  have  to  do  with  us  Christians?  Well  Colossians  3  verse  3  to  4  says  that  Christ  is  our  Life.  Ultimately  we  have  to  choose  between  Christ  and  death,  we  cannot  sit  on  the  fence,  if  we  choose  Christ  we  have  to  live  for  Him.  For  we  cannot  say  we  have  Christ  in  our  life  if  we  don’t  obey  His  commands (  1  John  2  verse  3  to  4 ).

God  says  in  Hebrews  3  verse  7,  Today  if  you  hear  his  voice,  do  not  harden  your  hearts! Do  we  choose  to  submit  to  God  and  obey  him?  Or  do  we  choose  to  harden  our  hearts.

Pharaoh  had  hardened  his  heart  several  times ( Exodus 7 verse 22,  8  verse 15,19, 32) .  He  had  several  opportunities  to  repent  and  obey  God’s  command  to  release  the  Israelites.  He  kept  on  playing  with  God  by  repenting  and  then  hardening  his  heart,  until  his  kingdom  was  ultimately  ruined.

We  should  choose  Life,  for  as  we  see  with  Pharaoh’s  example  the  cost  of  playing  with  death  is  too  high.  God  doesn’t  play  around  you’re  either  completely  for  Him  or  not  at  all.

Heart and Soul with God!

 Trusting  God  is  very  important,  it  is  easier  said  than  done  though.  We  often  trust  God  in  the  good times,  but  forget  about  Him  in  the  bad  times.  We  must  understand  that  God  remains  the  same  in  every situation ,  for  Jesus  is  the  same,  yesterday,  today  and  forever ( Hebrews 13 verse 8). We  have  to  trust  in  His  great  Love  and  Mercy,  for  He  alone  can  help  us  overcome  our daily  struggles  and  trials.  Trusting  God  is  a  lifestyle,  it  doesn't  mean  that  we  sit  around  doing  nothing.  We  have  to  trust  Him  and  do  all  things  to  the  honour  and  glory  of  God,  for  only  then  can  we  truly  be  trusting  in  Him.  Let  me  give  you  a  short  example:  There  once  was  a  Captain  of  a  troop  of  soldiers,  he  and  his  forces  were  holding  a  border  fort.  He  was  informed  that  reinforcements  were  on  their  way  to  relieve  them.  He  trusted  that  they  would  arrive  as  planned.  He  and  his  men  continued  fighting  the  enemy  and  holding  the  fort.  They  obviously  couldn't  stop  fighting,  just  because  they  heard  that  reinforcements  were  on  their  way,  or  they  would  be  completely  overrun.  In  the  same  way,  we  can't  stop  seeking  to  improve  our  situation  just  because  we  are  trusting  in  God, bear  in  mind,  that  we  must  do  what  God  wills,  not  just  anything,  but  exactly  as  He  tells  us  to  do.   

Let  us  read  1  Samuel  14  verse  1  to  14,  we  read  that  Jonathan  and  his  armor-bearer  attacked  a  Philistine  outpost,  even  though  they  were  outnumbered.  When  Jonathan  suggested  to  his  armor-bearer  that  they  should  go  over  to  the  philistine  outpost,  the  armor-bearer  replied, “ Go  ahead,  I  am  with  you  heart  and  soul.( Verse 7 )”  When  we  look  at  the  entire  situation,  it  is  very  surprising  as  to  why  the  armor-bearer  would  agree  to  go  to  the  enemy’s  outpost,  when  he  didn’t  even  have  a  weapon ( 1  Samuel   13  verse  22 ).  The  armor-bearer  could  have  easily  said  to  Jonathan  that, “  This  is  foolish,  we’ll  get  killed ”,  he  could  have  even  went  back  to  Saul  and  reported   Jonathan’s  plan,  which  Saul  was  sure  to  stop.  Saul  had  camped  out,  he  hadn’t  acted  yet,  as  his  men  had  no weapons,  Saul  would  have  definitely  stopped  Jonathan’s  plan,  as  it  was  humanly  impossible  to  defeat  the  Philistines  without  weapons.

The  armor-bearer  trusted  Jonathan,  he  had  no  doubt  that  what  Jonathan  said  would  be  done.  This  made  me  think,  “Do  we  trust  God  in  the  same  way?”  “Are  we  with  God  heart  and  soul?”  Do  we  trust  that  what  God  says,  will  be  done  or  do  we  doubt?

Just  as  Jonathan  asked  his  armor-bearer  to  follow  him,   in  the  same  way  Christ  asks  us  to  follow  him.  If  the  armor-bearer  had  such  faith  in  a  mere  man,  shouldn’t  we  have  faith  in  The  Creator  of  Heaven  and  Earth?

Jeremiah  17  verse  7  says,  “But  blessed  is  the  man  who  trusts  in  the  Lord,  whose  confidence  is  in  him.”   We  must  trust  God  with  all  our  heart  and  all  our  soul,  only  then  can  we  have  real  faith,  as  you  can  not  have  faith  in  someone,  you  don’t  trust!

To  trust  God  when  the  times  are  good  is  easy,  but  we  have  to  trust  Him,  even  when  the  times  are  bad,  just  as  Jonathan  asked  his  armor-bearer  to  follow  him  into  danger,  so  will  God  ask  us  to  follow  him  through  all  kinds  of  trials  and  danger.

James  1  verse  2  says,  “Consider  it  pure  joy,  my  brothers,  whenever  you  face  trials  of  many  kinds.”  We  have  to  trust  God  through  our  trials,  only  then  can  we  have  joy  even  in  the  midst  of  our  trials,  for  trials  will  come.

For  the  Bible  says, “  In  fact,  everyone  who  wants  to  live  a  godly  life  in  Christ  Jesus  will  be  persecuted( 2  Timothy  3  verse  12 )”

Notice  that  in  verse  13,  Jonathan  went  first  and  his  armor-bearer  followed  him,  in  the  same  way,  God  goes  out  before  us,  to  prepare  the  way!  For  God  says  in  Isaiah 52  verse  12 ,  “But  you  will  not  leave  in  haste  or  go  in  flight,  for  the  Lord  will  go  before  you,  the  God  of  Israel  will  be  your  rear  guard.”   We  have  to  seek  out  God’s  will,  we  must  not  act  in  haste,  for  God  will  only  prepare  for  us  on  the  path  he  has  set  out  for  us.  Jesus  says,  “And  anyone  who  does  not  take  up  his  cross  and  follow  me  is  not  worthy  of  me ( Matthew  10  verse  38 ).” He  also  says  in  Mark  8  verse  34, “  If  anyone  would  come  after  me,  he  must  deny  himself  and  take  up  his  cross  and  follow  me.”  We  must  deny  self  and  humbly  follow  Jesus’s  will,  for  there  is  no  other  way  but  Jesus,  for  He  is  the  way,  the  gate  that  we  must  enter  through,  He  alone  grants  us  grace,  He  alone  saves.  Finally  I  say  trust  God  for  “ He  who  trusts  in  God,  will  never  be  put  to  shame( 1  Peter  2  verse  6 )” 

Remaining In Christ

Today  I  would  like  to  speak  about  Colossians  1  verse  22  to  23,  this  passage  can  sometimes be  misused  by  Grace  preachers,  they  sometimes  believe  that  we  can  live  however  we  want  to, thinking  we  cannot  lose  our  salvation. This  is  not  true,  for  we  are  suppose  to  live  for  God's Will  alone ( 1 Peter 4 verse 1 and 2) , God  has  called  us  to  live  self  controlled  and  pure  lives ( Titus 2 verse 12). We  have  to  understand  that  to  truly  know  Christ,  we  have  to  obey  His commands ( 1 John 2 verse 3). It  is  an  everyday  journey,  we  have  to  obey  God's  commands,  for if  we  live  according  to  the  sinful  nature,  we  will  die  ( Romans 8 verse 13).  So  one  can  lose  his  place  in  heaven,  if  he  lives  according  to  the  sinful  nature ( the flesh in KJV):

Let  us  read  Colossians  1  verse  22  to  23.  It  explains  to  us  that  through  Jesus’s  death,  we  are  presented  to  God  the  Father  as  blameless  and  free  from  accusation.  God  basically  sees  His  Son’s  life  and  not  ours.  It  continues  to  say  that  this  can  only  happen  if  we  continue  in  the  faith, only  if  we  are  established  and  firm  in  the  Christian  faith.   How  do  we  become  established  and  firm  in  this  faith?  The  answer  is  found  in  John  15  verse  5  to  6.  We  can  only  become  established  and  firm  in  God,  if  we  remain  in  Jesus  Christ,  we  can  do  nothing  without  Christ!

 How  do  we  remain  in  Christ?  Jesus  answers  this  question  later  in  the  same  chapter (  chapter  15 ),  Jesus  says, “As  the  Father  has  loved  me,  so  have  I  loved  you.  Now  remain  in  my  love.  If  you  obey  my  commands,  you  will  remain  in  my  love,  just  as  I  have  obeyed  my  Father’s  commands  and  remain  in  His  love. ( Chapter  15  verse  9  and  10 )”  Jesus  is  His  Word,  His  commands  are  in  the  Bible  and  we  are  to  follow  these  commands,  because  He  has  commanded  us  to  do  so( John  14  verse  15  and  23 ).

In  Colossians  1  verse  23,  it  speaks  about  not  being  moved  from  the  Hope  held  out  in  the  gospel.  Jesus  is  our  hope,  for  He  is  the  very  being  of  the  gospel.  We  have  to  fix  our  eyes  upon  Jesus,  for  He  alone  is  the  author  and  perfecter  of  our  faith  ( Hebrews  12  verse  2 ) .  We  have  to  keep  Jesus  at  the  center  of  our  lives,  for  He  is  our  very  life  (  Colossians  3  verse  4  ),  For  in  God  we  live  and  move  and  have  our  very  being  (  Acts  17  verse  28  ) 

Jesus  does  not  take  second  place,  anything  that  we  put  before  Christ  becomes  our  god  and  Jesus  has  commanded  us  to  worship  God  alone  (  Matthew  4  verse  10   and  Exodus  20  verse  2  and  3 ),  He  has  to  be  number  one  in  our  life,  there  is  no  other  option,  we  either  worship  Him  alone  or  not  at  all!  Jesus  has  called  us  to  be  His  people,  a  holy  people,  a  people  that  belongs  to  Him!  (  1  Peter  2  verse  9  )

Therefor  friends,  remain  in  Christ,  hold  onto  Him,  for  He  gives  light  to  us  in  this  dark  world (  John  1  verse  9  ).  Jesus  alone  is  our  Hope  and   salvation  is  found  in  no  one  but  Jesus,  He  alone  can  save  us!  (  Acts  4  verse  10  to  12 )

Rejecting  The  Truth!

Let  us  read  2  Chronicles  34  verse  14  to  19,  we  read  that  the  book  of  the  law  was  found  by  Hilkiah  the  priest,  he  gave  it  to  Shaphan,  the  king’s  secretary,  Shaphan  then  read  it  in  the  king’s  presence.  This  was  the  first  time  the  king  heard  the  full  truth(  God’s  Word  is  the  Truth) ,  his  reaction  was  sincere,  he  tore  his  clothes,  as  this  is  a  sign  of  deep  grief!  The  king  was  grieved,  he  saw  that  he  and  his  people  had  not  fully  followed  God,  he  had  done  what  he  thought  would  please  God ,  for  he  had  removed  idol  worship  from  the  land(2  Chronicles  34  verse  3  to  7).

 He  had  not  known    God’s  Law  before  it  was  read  to  him,  but  he  tried  to  please  God,  in  the  way  he  thought  was  right.  Since  he  tried  to  become  right  with  God  before  they  found  God’s  Law,  God  granted  grace  to  him,  by  allowing  him  to  find  the  Book  of  the  law.  The  king  was  searching  for  truth  and  God  graciously  granted  him  the  whole  truth  which  is  found  in  His  Holy  Law.

  This  made  me  think,  what  is  our  reaction  when  we  hear  the  truth?  Do  we  change  our  lives  to  conform  to  God’s  Word  or  do  we  continue  in  our  sins?  When  confronted  with  the  truth,  we  cannot  afterwards  act  like  we  didn’t  know,  we  cannot  say  to  God,  “No  one  told  me  that  I  was  suppose  to  live  a  Holy  life.”  It  is  important  to  remember  that  God  does  not  give  His  grace  to  us  forever,  He  will  come  back  to  judge  this  world,  we  cannot  continue  in  sin  and  hope  to  change  after  we  have  had  a  good  time  with  that  which  is  wrong.   

Friends  let  me  remind  you  of  a  scripture  in   2  Thessalonians  2  verse  9  to  11,  it  says, “  The  coming  of  the  lawless  one  will  be  in  accordance  with  the  work  of  satan  displayed  in  all  kinds  of  counterfeit  miracles,  signs  and  wonders,  and  in  every  sort  of  evil  that  deceives  those  who  are  perishing.  They  perish  because  they  refused  to  love  the  truth  and  so  be  saved.  For  this  reason  God  sends  them  a  powerful  delusion  so  that  they  will  believe  the  lie.”

Friends,  if  we  keep  on  rejecting  the  truth,  then  we  leave  ourselves  open  to  being  deceived.  God  will  send  us  a  powerful  delusion  to  make  us  believe  the  lies  around  us,  such  as, “ God  doesn’t  mind  whether  you  live  a  holy  life  or  not.”  When  we  continue  to  reject  God,  time  after  time,  He  gives  us  over  to  ourselves.   It  becomes  harder  and  harder  to  accept  the  truth,  we  drift  further  and  further  from  it,  until  we  don’t  even  consider  our  sins  as  evil( Romans  1  verse  21  to  32)!

If  we  earnestly  seek  God  he  will  be  found,  but  if  we  forsake  Him  then  He  will  forsake  us (  2  Chronicles   15  verse  2).

We  should  make  our  lives  right  with  God  and  not  reject  His  Truth,  for  rejecting  His  Word,  would  be  rejecting  Him,  as  Jesus  is  the  Word,  He  is  the  Truth (  John  14  verse  6)  and  if  we  reject  Jesus,  we  reject  God,  for  Jesus  and  God  are  one! (John  10  verse  30)

Therefor  when  you  encounter  the  Truth  in  God’s  Word,  act  immediately ,  don’t  leave  it  for  too  long  as  you  slowly  drift  away  from  the  Truth,  until  you  are  not  affected  by  it  anymore!
